Building power now!

A ‘zine for a socialist political alternative

Lizartistry has created a new share-able 'zine that speaks to the disillusionment with electoral politics and offers a vision of how to build political power from the perspective of socialism from below.

Given the mass divestment from electoral politics as demonstrated in the 2024 presidential election, this zine was made with the idea of being able to share a quick and accessible resource at marches and other actions with people who might be looking for alternative analyses than mainstream media and ways to plug in after the march beyond waiting for the next election.

This zine is based on the episode “Democratic Dealignment” of The Dig podcast featuring Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor’s and the Haymarket “Trump’s Hammer, Our Hope: An Emergency Townhall” panel with KYT, Naomi Klein, Chenjerai Kumanyika, and Astra Taylor, and various Tempest articles – “Trump and his oligarchs (back) at the gate” by the Tempest National Committee, “Trump seizes power in D.C.” by Ashley Smith, and “We need to do this together”by David Whitehouse.

To make the zine, download the PDF file for  FromTheStreetsToThePeople and print it double-sided. Then follow the instructions below to fold it. The pink and green side are the folded pages while the blue side is like a secret poster than can be found by unfolding the zine. (Note: The images in the carousel below do not match 1:1 the pages of the zine as they were modified to fit here.)

Below are a diagram and (adapted) written instructions to fold a one-page zine via 42nd Street.

  1. Fold your paper in half lengthwise (hotdog-style).
  2. Fold in half again.
  3. Fold it in half one more time.
  4. Unfold it. The 8 pages should now be creased at the edges.
  5. Fold the paper in half crosswise (hamburger-style) and cut the center (halfway down the page).
  6. Unfold your paper. You should see a slit in the middle of the page.
  7. Fold it in half (lengthwise) and push together.
  8. Flatten the pages with the cover on top.
  9. TA DA! You’ve folded a zine!
  10. Open the zine to find the secret poster inside.

Here is a video of how to fold a one-page zine via @brattyxbre. You can also see an example of her unfolding a secret poster zine at 11:37 of this video.”

And here are the panels from the zine:
