Women’s liberation and the fight against the Trump regime

In my opinion, another central component should be added. We must also include the millions of women who are suffering and dying because of draconian abortion bans and restrictions in states across the nation, all pregnant people denied abortion access and millions of uninsured and under-insured who never had access to full reproductive health care across the U.S., especially in the south.
The threats within Project 2025 are just getting started against abortion medication, which threatens women and all pregnant people in every state, as does the imminent and ongoing threat to the right to reproductive care in emergency rooms, and the criminalization of both patients and providers. All this in the U.S., which has the highest maternal infant mortality and morbidity rates in the “advanced” world.
In just the first days of the new administration, without going full throttle (yet) on abortion rights, which a majority in this country are for maintaining, including Trump’s own supporters, the administration has attacked programs that fund abortions overseas, undercut federal funding to poor and underserved communities, pardoned those who violently blocked access to abortion clinics, and is pushing to confirm a new healthcare czar who would fund “fake clinics,” crisis pregnancy centers which spew lies and do not deliver reproductive care. Not to mention attacks on all DEI programs, and more. We must be on high alert as assaults mount against the rights of women, queer, trans, and all fighting for bodily autonomy.
Plus, the intensifying assaults against women, queer, and trans people is stoking and reinforcing violent, misogynist behavior that intersects with every other struggle within the working class: in workplaces, in communities, housing, education, among immigrants, and all people of color.
Alongside the direct impact on women, queer, trans and all gender non-conforming people, we must remember that women’s oppression is a fundamental pillar of capitalist exploitation. Therefore, the fight for women’s liberation must also be central to the fight to transform the system, overthrow capitalism, and bring to birth the new world that is possible.
