Resisting the backlash

Led by Florida governor Ron DeSantis, the Republican Party has launched a reactionary attack on Black Studies and discussions of race and racism in schools, colleges, and universities. The attack has led to book bans and curriculum restrictions around the country. But students, parents, librarians, and educators are not taking this lying down and are organizing to oppose the censorship. Join us on Sunday, March 26 at 2 pm EDT for a discussion of the reasons for the backlash against Black Studies and how we can defeat it. This event has been endorsed by National Educators United.

Speakers:

Jesse Hagopian is an ethnic studies teacher at Garfield High School in Seattle. He is a member of the Black Lives Matter at School national steering committee and co-editor of Black Lives Matter at School (Haymarket, 2020).

Daniel Martinez HoSang teaches Ethnicity, Race and Migration and American Studies at Yale University and is the author of A Wider Type of Freedom: How Struggles for Racial Justice Liberate Everyone (U. of California, 2021).

Donna Murch is an associate professor of history at Rutgers University, where she is chapter president of the New Brunswick chapter of Rutgers AAUP AFT. Her most recent book is Assata Taught Me: State Violence, Racial Capitalism, and the Movement for Black Lives (Haymarket, 2022). She is a member of the Tempest Collective.
