Mobilize on December 1 for abortion rights
A Reader’s reply: Fighting for the future!
The November 17 Tempest article, “Won’t go back; Reports from the abortion justice struggles”, makes several important points, and among them, it declares the critical importance of taking to the streets and hails the outpouring of abortion rights supporters on October 2, all over the country.
In fact, more than 100,000 people were in the streets of the U.S. on that day. It should therefore be a priority of Tempest and all its readers to get out into the streets on December 1 and organize others to join us.
All eyes will be on the U.S. Supreme Court when it hears oral arguments in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, involving the 15-week Mississippi abortion ban, which directly seeks to overturn Roe v. Wade.
There are mobilizations planned for outside the Supreme Court in Washington D.C., including an action in the morning, “Abortion is Essential: Rally for Our Rights” and one at 1:00 p.m. ET that calls for “Holding the Line for Abortion Justice.” (see information below.)
There is also an Abortion Freedom Fighters Day of Action planned for Jackson, Mississippi. Please note that this action is very significant in that one of the organizers is SHERO Mississippi (Sisters Helping Every woman Rise and Organize), which is an organization dedicated to building and promoting leadership among Black women and girls. Other organizers include Mississippi in Action and the Mississippi Abortion Access Coalition. They have support from Planned Parenthood Southeast.
And, we in Chicago have assembled a coalition of 14 pro-abortion groups, and growing, to “Rally for Abortion Rights: Defend Roe.”
In all these places, and everywhere else we learn about, we should be turning out as many as we can of the majority in this country that opposes overturning Roe and is for removing obstacles to obtaining safe and legal abortions.
We are against legislative bans at 6 weeks, 15 weeks, all bans! We are against all restrictions! We must defend Roe and the right to control our bodies and our lives!
We are at a critical juncture in the fight to defend and extend abortion rights, and we must act with urgency, building unity in action everywhere that we can!
In Chicago, join the Rally for Abortion Rights: Defend Roe.
