{"id":9687,"date":"2023-03-19T01:14:20","date_gmt":"2023-03-19T05:14:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tempestmag.org\/v01_2020\/staging\/?p=9687"},"modified":"2023-03-19T01:14:20","modified_gmt":"2023-03-19T05:14:20","slug":"anti-lamentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tempestmag.org\/test02\/2023\/03\/anti-lamentation\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-lamentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">S<\/span>ometimes, when hot and tired,<br \/>\nI wonder why I dream<br \/>\nof future societies<br \/>\nwhere all can live<br \/>\nfulfilled.<br \/>\nWon\u2019t the warming kill us long before,<br \/>\ndriven by the metastatic cancer<br \/>\nof capital\u2019s neverending need for more?<br \/>\nBut then I think:<br \/>\nMaybe so.<br \/>\nBut maybe not.<br \/>\nAnd while we wait the decades<br \/>\nbefore we know what doom awaits us,<br \/>\nthink of the miracles of love<br \/>\nwe can create<br \/>\nif our angry crowds banish capital<br \/>\nfrom off the Earth.<br \/>\nWe can build dikes together,<br \/>\nload ships with grain<br \/>\nfor starving survivors<br \/>\nin South Africa, the Italian<br \/>\nArchipelago, and the migrants<br \/>\nafter the deluge sinks Florida<br \/>\nlike Atlantis long before.<br \/>\nAnd as we work together<br \/>\nto save what can be saved,<br \/>\nperhaps build the long-sought,<br \/>\nlong-lost<br \/>\nbeloved community,<br \/>\ndike by dike,<br \/>\ngrain by grain.<br \/>\nAnd perhaps even salvage some new civilization<br \/>\nwhere our remnant few<br \/>\ncan thrive among the ruins.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9689\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9689\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9689 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/tempestmag.org\/test02\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/friedman-poem-1024x570.jpg\" alt=\"Two illustrations sit side-by-side.
