T<\/span>he cause of socialist democracy\u00a0lost a giant last week with the death of Michael Hirsch, a comrade with family roots in the Jewish working class of New York City as well as in the global youth radicalization of the 1960s.<\/p>\n Calling him as a giant is partly tongue-in-cheek: Mike stood over six feet tall, and it comes as little surprise to learn he played basketball in his younger days. But more to the point, he had a big heart and an outsized personality \u2014 one unapologetically rough around the edges, often bouncing from genial to gruff and back again in the course of a single conversation.<\/p>\n An\u00a0obituary<\/a>\u00a0points out that Mike was active in \u201cthe early Students for a Democratic Society, the antiwar movement of the 1960s and \u201870s, the International Socialists, Ed Sadlowski\u2019s campaign for leadership of the United Steelworkers of America, the Democratic Socialists of America, the Left Labor Project, and New Jewish Agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n The list is not exhaustive. In recent years, Mike was also a member of the socialist organizations Solidarity and Tempest \u2014 and his comrades from the editorial board of\u00a0New Politics<\/em>\u00a0recall with gratitude how he continued to write and edit articles for the journal even while in treatment for cancer, among other medical issues.<\/p>\n Mike was a prolific labor journalist and radical commentator. His\u00a0first article<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0New Politics<\/em>\u00a0appeared in the Spring 1970 issue, and an archive of his NP articles from 2014-\u201921 is available\u00a0here<\/a>. The website for\u00a0Jacobin<\/em>\u00a0magazine also carries\u00a0a number<\/a>\u00a0of his pieces.<\/p>\n The Marxist literary historian Alan Wald offered a judicious assessment of Mike in a comment left on the obituary posting mentioned earlier:<\/p>\n \u201cMichael set a high bar for socialist activists of our generation. With a rugged but magnetic aura, he was versatile in his interests, thoughtful in his commitments, and characterized overall by a determined resilience. Like many of us, he could be contentious, but more often an avatar of reason and calm. In conversation and writing I mostly found him compelling and lucid, with a level of fairness and objectivity that is needed more than ever in our challenging times.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Mike\u2019s many friends, comrades, and collaborators can only extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Lee and the rest of their family.<\/p>\n
