Numerous documents were circulated in the months leading up to the convention, and brief introductory talks were given by various comrades to \u201ckick-off\u201d discussions. The following poem was submitted by a Tempest Collective member at the conclusion of the convention with the following valediction:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>to organize in liberation,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>we practice. Your dear<\/em><br \/>\n<em>comrade,<\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong> Brian Young Jr.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"half\" \/>\n<p>Comrade,<br \/>\nI know you<\/p>\n<p>once intangible<br \/>\nwe collab-<br \/>\norated<br \/>\na degree\u2014a screen\u2014<br \/>\nseparate were we<br \/>\nyet moved<br \/>\nI knew<br \/>\ncomfort that<br \/>\ndissolved the screens<br \/>\nand, yes, it was<br \/>\nwe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">you were<br \/>\nBaldwin &#8220;Beale Street&#8221; Black;<br \/>\nEmma &#8220;no dance, no revolution&#8221; white;<br \/>\nArundhati &#8220;Broken Republic&#8221; Brown;<br \/>\nyour hair is now Cornel West grey, blown-out like<br \/>\nAngie on Court day;<br \/>\nyour words bred commitment, John Brown<br \/>\nact of faith; and you moved, yes your grace<br \/>\nbrought<br \/>\nfreedom, freedom from ancient<br \/>\nAfrica<br \/>\nto lasting Ballrooms of today.<\/p>\n<p>but screens,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m reminded of<br \/>\nborders<br \/>\nthose that separate<br \/>\nour common<br \/>\nunyielding need<br \/>\nfor camaraderie<\/p>\n<p>we<br \/>\ncommuned<br \/>\nat Haymarket<br \/>\n&amp; were<br \/>\nreassured our mission<br \/>\nstands in anti-<br \/>\nthesis with<br \/>\nSisyphus<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">that hill\u2014which is our challenge\u2014is life. Its heights stretch<br \/>\npast the heavens. Its lows<br \/>\npierce Hades. The end,<br \/>\nwe know not. But that boulder,<br \/>\nthat is our oppression, contains our ancestors&#8217; pain. Their<br \/>\nblood runs down my sleeves as I push with you. They were<br \/>\ncrushed in battle; on plantations; at borders;<br \/>\nin prisons; at gunpoint; on streets; at work; in their homes<br \/>\n\u2014their homes weren&#8217;t their safe space; by lovers. They were<br \/>\ncrushed by lovers,<br \/>\neven today.<\/p>\n<p>We push to reclaim<br \/>\ntheir hope<br \/>\n\u2014our mission\u2014of liberty. And<br \/>\nthere is no sense of futility in you, futility in me.<\/p>\n<p>And screens<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ve made<br \/>\nutility<br \/>\nbut have that<br \/>\nwish<br \/>\nI had to see<br \/>\nI had to have<br \/>\nmy faith<br \/>\nrestored in this decree:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We can govern ourselves.<br \/>\nI kid you not.<\/p>\n<p>Now tangible<br \/>\nyour height un-<br \/>\nproved what<br \/>\nI perceived<br \/>\nyou were 5-2, 6&#8217;3<br \/>\n5 feet, 6 feet<br \/>\nboth above<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nin between<\/p>\n<p>you wore<br \/>\nthose blue<br \/>\ncasual jeans<br \/>\na gold hoop<br \/>\nearring<br \/>\na hat that matched<br \/>\nblack tees<br \/>\nyou wore 2pac<br \/>\nyou knew, as<br \/>\nI know, Killer<br \/>\nMike &amp; El-P<br \/>\nyour mouth<br \/>\nwide open you<br \/>\nchortled with glee<br \/>\nyou ate\u2014we<br \/>\nwere<br \/>\nfed.<\/p>\n<p>And we<br \/>\nwe disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>I ask you<br \/>\na question<br \/>\ncomrade:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">how might I, how might you,<br \/>\nhow might we? Inspire us to<br \/>\ndrink from life\u2019s well<br \/>\nto trust in its history. Trust<br \/>\nas it flows<br \/>\nthrough us with<br \/>\nthe force of our<br \/>\nevolving species.<\/p>\n<p>How might I inspire you to<br \/>\njust keep moving? Keep moving,<br \/>\nwhen moving seems a distant fantasy. Keep moving,<br \/>\nwhen the rise of the sun encourages the<br \/>\nheavy chore of merely arising out of bed. Even when,<br \/>\nthose corporate powers seek to solidify as<br \/>\nprivate property. Even when, in struggle against that small<br \/>\nclass of the so-called elites we suffer a defeat.<br \/>\nWe keep moving.<br \/>\nAnd not just move.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We organize, we build, we assert that tangible future of our Socialist vision.<\/p>\n<p>And comrade<br \/>\none more<br \/>\nthing:<\/p>\n<p>Did you know the muscles of those who fight often ache?<br \/>\nDid you know those who wish to carry light<br \/>\nface the uncertainty of the grey? &#8216;Cause certainly the night<br \/>\nseems unyielding to the hope of a new day. But, I&#8217;m reminded that<br \/>\nhope is a verb.
