{"id":10334,"date":"2023-05-28T19:16:30","date_gmt":"2023-05-28T23:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tempestmag.org\/v01_2020\/staging\/?p=10334"},"modified":"2023-05-31T21:41:13","modified_gmt":"2023-06-01T01:41:13","slug":"essential-uprising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tempestmag.org\/test02\/2023\/05\/essential-uprising\/","title":{"rendered":"Essential Uprising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Essential Uprising<\/p>\n<p>When the minimum wage is gridlocked at $7.25<br \/>\nAnd I\u2019m dedicated to the humble goal of staying alive<br \/>\nI must fight for the right to organize<br \/>\nBefore my very eyes<br \/>\nI\u2019m watching the price of everything skyrise<br \/>\nWhile my check\u2019s paltry purchasing power plummets and nosedives<br \/>\nWho can survive off of measly $15.00 an hour<br \/>\nHow do we fight back against these misers in power<br \/>\nI\u2019m tired of trading in my life in exchange for pennies<br \/>\nHow do we crush a system where a few get rich from exploiting many<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWorkers must organize to assert their power<br \/>\nWe must unionize so we don\u2019t get devoured<br \/>\nWithin the ravenous fangs of profit-hungry bosses<br \/>\nWho treat our lives as bottom lines causing shareholder losses<br \/>\nMy physical, mental and emotional wellbeing can\u2019t be reduced to operational expenditures<br \/>\nI refuse to be disfigured<br \/>\nDehumanized into dead digits and fractional figures<br \/>\nOn corporate spreadsheets that function like Middle Passage manifests<br \/>\nTurning human beings into inanimate objects<br \/>\nThe silent cogs in wheels who feed the machine their flesh<br \/>\nWe graduated from 3\/5 of a human on their constitution<br \/>\nTo the gaudy and abundant amount of 1.5 of a person on a spreadsheet calculating headcount<br \/>\nYet my paycheck doesn\u2019t even account<br \/>\nFor the singular needs of me<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let alone that whole half a person they squeezing out of me for free<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nA living wage and full benefits are not perks<br \/>\nThey\u2019re basic human rights for those that work<br \/>\nThey are basic human rights for those that don\u2019t work<br \/>\nAnd these basic human rights<br \/>\nMUST be the foundation on which we fight<br \/>\nAnd if the bosses object then we\u2019ll go on strike<br \/>\nWe\u2019ll cripple the corporations because they\u2019re NOTHING without us<br \/>\nThe longer we strike the more we\u2019ll realize our power<br \/>\nAs we realize our power, we\u2019ll grow more militant<br \/>\nExpanding our demands;
